Yuen-yi Lo is an artist, writer, lecturer based in Hong Kong and Macau. Trained in the fields of Communication Design and Fine Arts in Hong Kong, Italy and Britain, Currently she is teaching Visual Arts at the Faculty of Education, University of Macau. Drawing is the central practice in Lo’s creative work. She has been working with simple tools such as graphite on paper and fabrics. Her artworks concern visual ethnography, taking on script graphs and old objects; while her writings explore such themes as art and culture, feminism and oral history etc. By drawing script graphs, she attempts to look into the limitations of language culture; and through appropriating with ordinary objects, she hopes to retain traces of objects in relations to human beings. While her drawing suggests the intensity of filling the time/space, she extends the work into other bodies and dimensions, seeking multiplicities and diversities, and searching for the fluidity, ever-changing characteristics. To a certain extent, drawing is considered “peripheral” in traditional Western arts. She deliberately takes it as her practice to explore its role, to look for the possibilities of visual language in contemporary art. Last but not least, she aims to make justice that drawing is an independent and progressive medium in its own right.
